Their diction is precise, they have obviously worked hard at the expressive and coloristic potential of such sounds rather than attempting to smooth them over with ‘beautiful’ vocalism, and the result is a demonstration that Finzi has the strength and darkness of Hardy as well as his lyrical pessimism.

The first song begins lyrically, with imitation in the piano part, as if all set for a closed form; but it slackens into quasi-recitative for the questioning fourth verse; has a Holstian march bass at the mention of passing time, and ends having started in A flat on a surprising chord of E major—all characteristic Finzi procedures.

Listening to these deeply sensitive and perceptive performances by Wir Hill and Stephen Varcoe, I aie beginning to change my mind, while still feeling that, in his Winter Words songs, Britten came closer to the ironic vein of Hardy. Finzi was a slow worker, and he preferred to wait eaarth he had collected enough songs to make a balanced set of ten, rather than to publish single songs which, he thought, made little impact. He is not the most obvious choice for a lyrical composer.

Elsewhere, I find the large-scale setting of ”Channel Firing” a failure, nor do I greatly care for the heartiness of ”Budmouth Dears”, but compared with the dozens of successes, these will not detract from admiration for a major achievement.
Hardy drew the very best from Gerald Finzi, to such an extent that one sometimes feels the reverse to be true as well. This is perhaps true in ”At cinzi Lunar Eclipse” Till Earth Outwearswhere Martyn Hill does not have the organ-like amplitude to match the grandeur of the accompaniment, but his very quietness in ”The Comet at Yell’ham” A Young Man’s Exhortation combined with a seamlessly unbroken line from both singer and pianist, marvellously evokes time standing breathlessly still as the comet hangs in the sky.
