In this essay, I endeavored to read El Roto as a narrativization of the complex flows and interactions of economic, social, political and ecological forces that shaped and reshaped the space of Borja Street in Santiago, Chile during the first decades of the twentieth century. As a consequence, the text transfers blame onto the roto for perpetuating his poverty and disease-stricken existence.
