This is an intense novel about a writer and his mixed up life. If you think this is a book you just take before going to bed, read for 10 minutes and then go to sleep, you are wrong. Our mother noticed what was going on and we had to have “the talk”. Perhaps, the most difficult part of reading Tranquility is being forced to acknowledge that we, too, share some of the narrator’s less flattering thoughts, feelings, and actions, and this is, I think, Bartis’s greatest achievement–forcing us to confront all that we wish to suppress.
I re-read big chunks of this book again yesterday, leaping forward and backwards across its fractured chronology and feverishly turning the pages. Well he pegged this once correctly.
